The film is set in China's Hengdian World Studios, the world's largest film studio and the shooting locale of countless Chinese period productions. Audiences are introduced to the world of Chinawood through the eyes of bumbling country boy Peng (Wang Guopeng), who arrives in Hengdian with nothing to his name besides an earnest desire to become an actor. From there, he befriends fellow wannabe thespians with dreams and disillusions of their own, and gradually learns the ropes of life as an extra at Hengdian, from survival know-how to working protocol, in the process offering a slice-of-life insider's look into acting and filmmaking in all its scrappy glory.
